Keeping it Real

Rafael “Rafi” Thomas
Songwriter/ Producer/ Vocalist
Impressive Media, LLC, Owner

At first I was going to write this Bio in the 3rd person- then I thought, “Let’s be REAL” how many “unknowns” actually have their Bio’s written for them? So in staying with the theme of “Keeping it real” here’s the real story of “me’

I started writing songs, singing, rapping and performing early in life, around age 5.
In the late 80’s through the mid 90’s I managed to place a few songs with Small/ Independent companies, none were ever released (that I know of). As far as any notable credits or work that I’ve done, with the exception of a “B” side rap song titled “Dual Tones” that I wrote and produced for a rap group named “Rock & Gee and DJ Shawn” for Polygram Records in 1989 (before they went out of business), I have no other credits to my name (that I can legally mention). I also wrote & co-wrote 9 out of 12 songs for a Chicago based R&B group named “Battle” that was signed to Relativity Records in the early 90’s but the company went under just before releasing the CD and kept the masters as far as I know. So with all of these disappointments in my music career (if it can be called that) be it bad luck, bad timing or whatever, I did what every other struggling and aspiring music professional does from time to time. I gave it up! I traded my childhood dream for the “American Dream”.

Now, I’m in my late 30’s and I have accomplished a lot. Is it the “American Dream” (I'll let you decide). I have a beautiful wife, 3 beautiful, healthy and intelligent children, I own my own home and I earn a decent living. Albeit, not doing something that I love to do but I’ve learned that we do what we have to achieve the things that what we want. I’ve also recently started a multi media company that will encompass all facets of music from music production for CD’s to other types of media music such as music beds for radio/ TV advertisements, on hold music, etc.
I have accomplished most personal and business goals that I’ve set for myself. Except ONE!

I’ve always kept a small project studio, and never stopped writing songs, I’ve always stayed on top of what was hot and new on the music scene, and have always felt that my talent, and my songs are as good if not better than what was currently out there. As a matter of fact, it has been recently brought to my attention by a former music publisher that he just realized (unfortunately for me) that my songs have always seemed to be a year or two ahead of the current market. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I decided to really have a go at the music industry again. Technology has really leveled the playing field for us “unknowns” and now it’s a whole new game out there.
I realize that besides not giving it my all, and being simply “unprepared” to be successful maybe the reason that I was unsuccessful my first time around was because of my view of “success”. Then, I viewed success as achieving “Fame and Fortune” not considering the amount of work necessary to accomplish that. Now, with more “life experiences” I view success much differently. Fame and fortune would be great, but being able to generate a modest living doing something that I’ve always loved to do and achieving notoriety from my creativity and talent; now that’s what I would call being a success!

Opportunities are seldom prefect, but if you’re not ready for them they may never come again. However, luck favors the prepared! And I am more prepared now than I have ever been before and unlike my first time around, I understand all the hard work and sacrifices necessary to accomplish a high level of success. All I need now is a chance! I need an opportunity from a person or company that not only shares my ambitions but also understands my creative visions. Give me a chance to prove to you that I not only “have” what it takes but I’m ready to “do” what it takes!
