Jes Gilman had no real music experience before picking up an acoustic guitar in his junior year of college. With no formal training or even a basic understanding of music theory, Gilman attempts to tell his stories using whatever guitar parts or vocals sound good to his ears. If you asked him what chords he's playing or what key he's in, half of the time he wouldn't be able to tell you. His approach to music can essentially be summed up with this line from his song Can of Worms: "just a man with a guitar and a voice good enough to tell his story with." Gilman's music is all about heart and soul, sound and feel, passion and heartbreak, joy and longing. With this no frills approach, he aims to leave listeners with a raw and real experience of life through his eyes.
