Karawitan Sunda is the basis of his compositions. Karawitan, meaning traditional music, and Sunda, defining the culture where the music comes from. He has composed these pieces using samplings of the various Sundanese instruments on a MIDI computer program and playing live Suling (bamboo flute), Kacapi (20-string zither), Kendang (traditional drums) and Kendrums. The Kendrums are his latest innovation, combining the 'western' drumkit and traditional drum sounds of West and East Java. Usually gamelan, the traditional Indonesian orchestra, is based on 4/4, but Efiq's new compositions use times like 5/8, 7/8, 31/16, 48/16, etc. The compositions are all based on different pentatonic scales, called Pelog, Madenda, Salendro, and also diatonic tuning.
