A Life Once Lived

Story Behind The Song

As a child, my Grandmother told me that my grandfather fought in WWII. I was only 6 years old when I asked about a picture on the wall of him when he was in the Navy. His gaze went blank and had a flashback of a moment in the war. When he came back to the present, he didn't recognize me at first. I wondered where he went or what he saw but he never spoke about it again. When I enlisted in the Army, after 5 years served, I joined the U.S. Army Special Forces. As a Green Beret, I deployed on humanitarian, foreign training and combat missions. During many stints in Iraq and flashing back (when I wanted to write about me now) I saw the missions, the bodies, the destruction and remember my "I got you before you got me" mentality after killing the enemy. After many combat tours, the Army asked me to be a cadre/teacher for up and coming Green Beret trainees. My students have never seen the violent side of me and I remembered how I viewed my cadre when I went through the course. I thought they were washed up and out of practice until I saw them back in the warzone. If my students look at me that way, I would have to show them the violent side of me and then I wouldn't be viewed as washed up.

The now man fights wars around the globe and after awhile, the Army makes him a teacher of young soldiers. He has little punks for soldiers who think they know who he is but who he really is is a Seasoned Gunfighter who doesn't have to show that side of him to his students.
