The Battle of Somme

Story Behind The Song

There was a great and horrible battle in World War I that left nearly 80,000 casualties. How men could muster the courage to take a step forward into such a terrible and certain death is beyond words. How men could send their brothers to such deaths is beyond conscience.

Lyrics

20,000 soldiers who will never go home
In a single day they all fell
Name after name after name carved in stone,
The Battle of Somme; their hell.

Artillery explodes, the ground shakes from below.
Riddled bodyies caught in barbed wire
Wave upon wave of men cut down like grain, by the scythe of machine gun fire.

Oh God, pray for your sons.
Pray for us all.

Can you hear the men say?
'Is it our turn today?
Do we fight for our freedom?
Do we march to our graves,
at the Battle of Somme?
Where all hope is gone,
and nothing can save us.'
And still they marched on.

Wave after wave now it's their turn to face,
machine guns up on the hill.
Flash of bright ride as the enemy draws aim,
one by one they all fell.

Will they sing us a song?
Will the glory live on?
Of the battle of Somme?
What have we done?
