All The Way To Heaven

Story Behind The Song

One night when my granddaughter was headed up to bed and saying prayers, she and her father would lovingly argue about who loves who the most and how far their love will reach, e.g., to the stars or moon and back etc. One night Rachel tells her father she loves him all the way to Heaven. Although not privy to that intimate conversation our son-in-law later shared the story with me. Having been a singer song writer for many years I felt ?all the way to heaven? was definitely a song hook. A few months later, unable to sleep in the early morning, I wrote the song in the shortest time I have every written a song, about 20 minutes. I have performed the song many times at various functions, including church or community socials and the response has been the same. Although it?s not a sad song it has brought tears to most who have heard it because I believe so many can relate to the ritual of tucking a child in bed at night.

Lyrics

ALL THE WAY TO HEAVEN
(Words & music by Gary L Ireland 5/3/2005 ©)

1) It was a game they played each night before she went to sleep
About who loved who the most and how far their love could reach
Taller than the trees and longer than a mountain stream
All the way to the moon and back or to the stars was the common theme
Then she paused for a moment and gave it one last thought
She said Dad I've got you this time and what she said touched his heart
Chorus1:
I love you all the way to heaven
Above the clouds, beyond the stars and furthest galaxy
All the way to heaven
Thats how far my love will reach

2) Well his five year old had won the game he was sure of that
Cause all the way to heaven well that as good as it can get
He got up from his knees and finished tucking her in bed
Walked down the stairs tried to explain just what she said
Then he paused for a moment and smiled at the thought
Was reminded of what the Lord said while on that Mountain Top
Chorus1:
Bridge:
The love of a child is honest and free, but the Fathers love well that's guaranteed
Chorus2
God's love is all the way to heaven
Above the clouds beyond the stars and past that milky-way
All the way to Heaven
Where one day you'll come to stay
One day you'll come to stay
One day we all will stay
