Mistress

Story Behind The Song

I was dating a musician who treated me like the other woman compared to his music career. The relationship ended and I was inspired to write this song.

Song Description

Mistress is a song about why you shouldn't date musicians. It's about loving someone who will prioritize their (literal or metaphorical) guitar over loving you. And by that I mean Mistress is a song for anyone who has ever come second in a relationship. For when you've been told you are asking for too much when you are asking for the bare minimum. It's a song for that moment when you realize that it's time to walk away. An understanding that you deserve so much more than you will ever get from this person and the hope that they will one day realize what they lost. Mistress is angry and hurt. And in the same breath it's empowering and vulnerable. Writing this song was standing up for myself. I hope it creates space for others to do the same.

Lyrics

Late nights, cloudy eyes
I know I'm not on your mind

I can tell by the way that you're touching me
I want you stay but you're gonna leave
I know, that you know
That I wish you were sorry

And you'll go run your hands down her neck
Play on all her strings until you forget
How you love me you need me you don't wanna see me sad
But you can't have us both so just go if you want her that bad

I'm not your mistress
I'll let you go
You're gonna miss this
When you're alone
Because 6 strings won't ever hold you like I did
And songs won't keep your warm inside your bed
And I'm not your mistress
No, I'm not your mistress

Long nights, cold sheets
The phone rings, I can't sleep

The space that you left laying next to me
Can't be filled with your bullshit apology
You know that I know
I'm not really sorry

And you'll go run your hands down her neck
Play on all her strings until you forget
How you love me you need me you don't wanna see me sad
But you can't have us both so just go if you want her that bad

I'm not your mistress
I'll let you go
You're gonna miss this
When you're alone
Because 6 strings won't ever hold you like I did
And songs won't keep your warm inside your bed
And I'm not your mistress
No, I'm not your mistress

Solo

I'm not your mistress
I'll let you go
You're gonna miss this
When you're alone
Because 6 strings won't ever hold you like I did
And songs won't keep your warm inside your bed
And I'm not your mistress
I'm not yours
I'm not your mistress
