We Won the War

Story Behind The Song

Written on the day the world's media trumpeted the fall of Baghdad to coalition forces, an occasion which apparently meant the war had been won. Except there never was a war. Not that people like the hysterical BBC correspondent Rageh Omar was particularly concerned about semantics - he, like most of the correspondents embedded with the American and British armies, was along for the ride. They all wanted their place in history and were all prepared to sacrifice their journalistic integrity to secure it. The mass media - with honourable exceptions being John Pilger and Robert Fisk - colluded in the invasion and subsequent decimation of a country and its people. They should hang their heads in shame.

Lyrics

They're telling us we won the war
They're telling us we struck a blow for freedom
So why does it all ring so hollow?
Why don't I see a better tomorrow?

I don't believe all that I'm told
I won't fall for their propaganda
These are men who have no honour
Addicted to the taste of power

And if you think you're living in a safe place
You'd be advised to take that smug grin off your face
'Cause next time it could be you, next time it could be you
Next time it could be you, next time it could be you

It's a bad day for sad people
All of our fears are being realised
The village idiot's colonising most of the village
Pretty soon there's be no place left to hide

So if you think you're living in a safe place
You'd be advised to take that smug grin off your face
'Cause next time it could be you, next time it could be you
Next time it could be you, next time it could be you

They're telling us we won the war
They're telling us we struck a blow for freedom
So why does it all ring so hollow?
Why don't I see a better tomorrow?
A better tomorrow, a better tomorrow...
