Onya, aka Aine O' Doherty comes from Bundoran, County Donegal, a popular surf town on Ireland's North-West Coast.
Onya's contemporary style and irrepressible attitude have made her a very popular, original and interesting singer-songwriter.
Raised in a musical family, and falling in love with the spotlight at a tender age in the family music -bar, she became well known to Irish audiences touring the college circuit with guitar in hand. In 2005 she hit the USA, road-testing her impressive song collection to an American audience. She travelled to New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, San Diego & Boston, performing in venues such as The Roxy, Los Angeles and CBGB's in Manhattan , festivals and sessions, College gigs and pub appearances.
She returned to Ireland in 2007, and selected 20 songs to demo for her debut CD. She continued to perform live, touring Europe and the US again, doing a residency in Las Vegas on the way. She recorded a 20-track demo titled'Secrets and Lies' in her home town of Bundoran.
In 2008 she returned to Los Angeles and selected the tracks for her debut CD 'Secrets and Lies'. Released on Indy label 'Musicminders', it is now on sale on iTunes. Onya had an excellent tour of the USA from Jan-Mar 08 including major gigs in Los Angeles, San Diego, and showcases @ SXSW 08. She went to SXSW with a slot on one showcase: Gogirls - and on the strength of that performance was invited to participate in six other showcases. In '09 she will return to SXSW and is currently submitting for slots.
In July 2008 Onya won the Brendan Graham Songwriting award. She was also a finalist in the prestigious Clonmel Song Contest2008. The album 'Secrets & Lies' was selected by Virgin Airlines for airplay 2009. In October 2008 she toured Europe, and went into studio in November 2008 to begin her second album, 'Little Diva'.
She has written and recorded most of the tracks for the next album, titled with Dublin-based producer, Gareth Mannix. This album features Onya's 'Little Diva' in full pop mode, with a collection of radio-friendly chick rock. Now working with a full band, these songs reveal Onya's potential as a serious contender for a major breakthrough in '09.
The current album, 'Little Diva' excavates Onya's experiences in America, particularly in California - the irrisistible lure of bright lights and fame, and the fine line between discovery and disappointment, the demands of the radio stations, the TV producers for instantly attractive power-pop anthems.
Influences range across the board- Strong female vocalists are a major influence, from Chrissie Hynde and Patti Smyth to the ladies named above. Current vocal influences at the moment are Jenny Lewis, Lady GaGa, Goldfrapp, Kelly Clarkeson, Linda Perry, Santogold. Onya's second album is also borrowing from the catchy guitar riffs of artists such as The Cure, Modest Mouse & The Cardigans. Lyrical themes and ideas are inspired from sources as diverse as the writing of Yeats, Whitman, & Kerouac to the California School of urban scientists, experiences of performing on a Saturday night in Las Vegas, and the following Tuesday in a tiny pub in the West of Ireland, living in Amsterdam, working in Dublin - she is a versatile and accomplished artist with an eye on both the local and the global.
Onya has all of the ingredients of a modern rock chick. Writer, musician and performer, she sounds fantastic and she looks fantastic. She aims, always, for more, but her feet are firmly on solid ground. Thank you for taking to time to introduce yourself to Onya, enjoy the music and thanks for listening.
