ROBBIE SMITH – BROADJAM BIO

Robbie Smith is a world-class trumpet player! He’s toured all over the world with international recording artist, Candye Kane. He has performed as part of a cruise ship band, played with the Ringling Brother’s Barnum and Bailey Circus in San Diego, appeared on The Penn and Teller Show, The Donny and Marie Show, The Roseanne Show, and various other European entertainment shows.

He started playing the trumpet when he was ten years old. His first trumpet was ordered straight out of a Sears catalog, as a kid his music lessons were more of a chore. It didn’t help that he’d selected one of the most difficult instruments to master. However, once started down the “trumpet-player” path, Robbie began to hear trumpets in everything from cartoons to sitcoms. Robbie briefly quit the trumpet during high school, but quickly resumed his lessons with a newfound appreciation and quest to hit those high notes, after hearing Maynard Ferguson play at his High School in Escondido, Calif.

It has taken years of practice and study, but Robbie has developed his own unique slant—from the way he looks, to the way he plays and performs. Robbie feels that no other musician plays quite like he does. Music is a way of life for him! He continues to educate himself in all aspects of music from composing to mixing and recording.

Robbie has performed with a variety of bands playing Blues, Swing, Jazz, Big Band, Rock and Top 40 music. He has backed up such artists as Candye Kane, Blue Largo, Sue Palmer, 2,000 Lbs of Blues, The Rancho Santa Fe Big Band, The Player’s,Todd Steadman, Billy Bacon, Chris Wiley, The Fabulous Ultratones, and The Martha’s Kitchen Band. He is also a member of the premier San Diego horn section known as “The Mighty Horns.”

He has played a multitude of venues around the world, including: The House of Blues – San Diego and Las Vegas, Sea World, Pala Casino, The Hyatt San Diego, San Diego Mardi Gras Festival, Coyote Bar - Carlsbad, The Belly Up - Solana Beach, Dizzy’s - San Diego, Croce’s - San Diego, Patrick’s II – San Diego, The Blue Café - Long Beach, The Rhythm Room - Phoenix, The Culver Saloon - Los Angeles, Moe’s Alley - Santa Cruz, Balboa Bay Club - Newport Beach, The Monterey Blues Festival, Mandalay Bay - Las Vegas, The Catwalk - Seattle, Lees Liquor Lounge - Minneapolis, Belgium Rhythm and Blues Festival, Byron Bay Blues Fest Australia, The New Morning Venue - Paris, Paradiso – Amsterdam, Luzern Switzerland Blues Session, Holland Venlo Summer Festival, Holland Martrock Festival, Le Radiant Lyon - France, Theater Mont De Marsan - France, Le Theatre Odeon Nimes - France, Festival Le Havre -France, Le Cac Concarneau - France, Le Grand Mix Tourcoining - France, La Passerelle Sete - France, Verviers Belgium, and Eindhoven Holland just to name a few.

May 2004, Robbie released his debut solo CD “Workin’ Like A Dog,” which features several original songs, and shows off his vocal talent as demonstrated on cover tune “That Old Black Magic,” with Alicia Aragon. For the most part, he considers himself “a trumpet player who sings, not a singer who plays trumpet.” Since then he’s been working diligently in his own recording studio on new songs and remixing some old favorites for his next CD. Although Robbie is fond of the Blues, Swing, and Big Band music he has been dabbling more in Jazz. He initially obtained inspiration from the most prominent of trumpet influences, such as Chet Baker, Clifford Brown, and Maynard Ferguson, while blending the stylistic influences of Louis Prima, Louis Jordan, and Wynonie Harris.

You can catch him performing all around Southern California. His sound is pure, simple, and perfectly executed! For more info visit www.robbietrumpet.com. He can be reached at 760.443.5656 or email at robbietrumpet@hotmail.com.
