Danny Newport Music

Danny Newport isn't trying to change the world. He's just telling it to chill out a little.

The suggestion floats hazily between the hip-hop beats, lucid acoustic guitar lines and thumping power chords of his 2009 debut release, The Beach Album. Twangy and sun-drenched, the Philadelphia native's take on a rock/hip-hop hybrid sounds like Beck and Lil Wayne sitting in the sand with dueling boom boxes.

Written and recorded during a yearlong stint in Los Angeles, the album is inspired by Newport's near-minimalist lifestyle on the west coast and the sense of purpose he found in it.

The son of a bluegrass musician, Newport was distributing homemade cassette tapes of his songs by junior high school. He closed out his teenage years by leading the rap/hard rock band JACD to first place in a Battle of the Bands hosted by a radio station in Lancaster, PA.

Newport tried the straight life, graduating college with honors and a degree in finance. He could have taken the world through Wall Street, but something wasn't quite right about that prospect. Ultimately, it took a journey across the country to find out why it was wrong.

Instead, after years of writing songs and working construction, Newport emptied his savings, packed a U-Haul, and headed out west. He settled in Los Angeles where he began honing his craft as a street performer.

He quickly caught the attention of veteran producer Joe Warlick (Doobie Brothers, Kanye West, TI), who guided him as he began writing and recording his first album.

Newport worked furiously on his record while under Warlick's wing, pausing only to contribute lyrics to the song "Pickin' Petals" for neo-soul singer Aimee Terrin. When it was done he hit the streets again, selling copies to pay his room and board.

But making it the Hollywood way wasn't for him. Not after he found solace in frugality instead of the glitter of L.A. and watched others get crushed where the gears of music and industry meet.

Instead, Newport returned To Philadelphia to begin work on his sophomore album and figure out how to find success on his terms. Focused on a message of enjoying the one shot everyone has at life, his new songs have won industry acclaim through songwriting competitions, including the XFS Festival in Telford, PA.

With everything in place to make his next release a success, the world seems like it was always Newport's for the taking. The only question was how he wanted to grab it.
