BANG sugar BANG are a punk rock threesome hailing from Los Angeles, CA. Their sound is a combination of '77 style punk rock and the music of the British Invasion, complete with a slamming beat, enticing male/female harmonies and a good beer drenching.

“If you're getting tired of all the bullshit punk that is out there and want to hear some Pixies-influenced type shit then, Bang Sugar Bang is the band for you. Sharing the microphone, Matt and Cooper are a couple of fucking nuts who know who the true god is: BEER. BSB music is like off-roading in a Mini Cooper. It will leave your nuts jumping and your head rattled (or maybe that's the other way around)” (Skratch magazine, July 2004).

Press Info

Even while preaching to the choir — literally, during the mass-sing-along set crescendo — here at the Echo, Bang Sugar Bang pour it on with rare passion and panache; their labor-of-love attitude says punk louder than any Mohawk or motto ever could. Thwak Thwak, X-raided and Jam-rammed though it is, takes a stylistic vault beyond the group’s self-conscious debut, and the songcraft and charisma are in place. This band can grace stages for as long as they choose to.

LA Weekly. Paul Rogers. Feb. 11-17, 2005.

Bang Sugar Bang is a band that could serve as the indie model. They haven’t made it to the point where they’re living off their music, but they’ve achieved measurable success. The group just won the Grand Prize in the West 2005 Independent Music World Series, a clear indication that their songwriting and live show have what it takes to impress the industry. But it’s an ability to create opportunities and to truly see things with a fresh perspective that has defined their success.

Bio

BANG sugar BANG are a punk rock threesome hailing from Los Angeles, CA. Their sound is a combination of '77 style punk rock and the music of the British Invasion, complete with a slamming beat, enticing male/female harmonies and a good beer drenching.

Cooper (vocals/bass) and Matt Southwell (vocals/guitars) formed BANG sugar BANG in 2001 while working at a Los Angeles based erotic jello mold company. Soon after Pawley Filth (drums), a college buddy of Matt's who had not been seen since he and Matt were thrown out of a Detroit club for pelting Ted Nugent with beer bottles a year before, joined BANG sugar BANG and their hard and fast style of punk rock was born.

The band has released two records independently, had it’s music featured on many television and film soundtracks (the ABC TV drama Grey’s Anatomy, Fish Without a Bicycle, the WB's Jack and Bobby), been the subject of press in print (The Village Voice, LA Weekly, Punk Planet) and on the web (Girlpunk.net, GloriousNoise.com, Sleazegrinder.com). In 2005, BANG sugar BANG was picked by the editors of Billboard Magazine (out of over 1000 bands that submitted) to be one of six finalists in the West Coast Independent Music World Series. In February 2005, they competed against five other finalists of amazing talent and diverse musical genres, the judging panel, comprised of top industry judges, chose BANG sugar BANG as the best overall band in the competition.

Playing a non-stop schedule of high voltage live shows across the country has enabled BANG sugar BANG to accumulate a formidable fanbase throughout Southern California and beyond. They have shared the stage with greats such as Nina Hagen, the Dead Kennedys and others. In addition, they are co-creators of the highly successful weekly punk/power pop club, Kiss or Kill. The club is dedicated to fostering Los Angeles’ indie music scene.
