Arbo’s true beginnings go back to early 2000, where Tom Wilbeck and Joe Karns met as roommates at Arizona State University. With musical tastes ranging from the likes of the Stones to Nirvana, the two guitar players shared many common influences and opinions. “It basically started when we’d be hanging out or watching TV and some band would come on and have a really popular song that was just terrible,” says Wilbeck. “Initially, I never really planned on starting a band, but always figured I could write songs better than what I was hearing. So one day I decided to go ahead and do so.” From there Wilbeck began writing the songs that would eventually become Arbo’s. With Karns adding lead guitar ideas the two started recording very early versions of songs using only a cheap miked recorder and a drum machine to keep time.
