This was about me disappearing out of someone's life, though the meaning of disappear changes throughout the song. When I was young a lot of my writing was coming from a place of unrequited love, being unsatisfied and saying I could disappear, and so I felt like I disappeared in their eyes. It's about how things fade over time, and that sometimes you have a choice to leave a situation in order to save your heart.
