Footfall echoes like a chorus in frozen alleyways
Rest your head against the hospital?s brick walls
Chase the smoke outlines in the corners of your breath
Midwestern winters are always much more intense

As tall buildings escape
Storm clouds disappear
Stars shining, skyscrapers climbing
I don?t hear their music anymore, anymore

The hospital towers over the university
Vines twist tight in all the spaces that I missed
Rain falls and sparkles silver like mercury
But in the sunshine concrete glitters with its respect

Downtown frowns with the weight of her intention
All the leaves fall down and get swept into the sea
Frost opens its mouth and swallows streets like pills,
Hungry for medicine that will never cure its chills

The church on the corner swells with answers
Stealing business from the banks across the street
The bars and the record stores give encouragement
To those who wander the avenues, cursing their dreams

?Wait here!? calls the nurse from the back door
Trees around the academy are in bloom, its wintertime
I found a magazine frozen to the sidewalk there
The girls in the centerfold look much more sincere
