Story Behind The Song

I was in a contemplative mood, observing people in a retirement home with little to look forward to. And the importance of having something to get excited about struck me. On the other hand, some people commented on hearing this song - 'I don't get it - what's your point?' People don't want to stop and think. Only protest songs make blatant points - end the war, empower women, feed the world. But lots of great songs had no point - Stairway to heaven, Hey Jude, Proud Mary.

Here's a story, of life, of growing up, always in breathless anticipation of something - catching a fish, Christmas, a first kiss, a car, a job, a baby. It's always important to find something to anticipate. When we're young it's an endless series of milestones that we navigate through. And we're oblivious of it. But it's there and it's important. Later we have to be creative and proactive in creating things to anticipate. You're 90. Do you look forward to reaching 100, and spend the next 10 years waiting for it?
