Story Behind the Song

A couple are escaping from financial ruin, holed up in dilapidated wooden shack on a road side The protagonist lies on the dirt floor and marvels his wife has stayed with him after he has gambled away their house land and business

Lyrics

Night it seeps in through the cracks
Of this highway byway wooden shack
No one's made this home for years
These walls have dried a 1000 tears

We stopped jn here just me n her
Running from the debt and failure

Well I lie here almost gratefully
This dirt floor is my sanctuary
My lady's gonna stay with me
Does she see somethin' I don't see?
Does she see somethin' good in me

Was flying high not long ago
A peacock in a field I'd sown
But the gambler it took hold of me
The season's change I didn't see

Her face went thin like a witch's broom
As I told the truth 'bout wrack and ruin

Well I lie I here almost gratefully . . .

She's combing dust right outta her hair
Sayin' our field's now embers n sparks
But she knows I meant the best for us
Cause me I bear a generous heart
