The Fire Song

Story Behind The Song

I was living in France and my apartment filled with smoke. I ran through the streets trying to find a policeman or fireman. I eventually found one, who helped me find another, and the firefighters came and looked and looked but found no fire. Later they did--in a bakery downstairs, where something was burning inside an industrial oven. Hm.

Lyrics

The window is an eyelid
It closes up tight when the lights go out
I can't sleep already
I hear every sound and the air is heavy

The ceiling is all wooden
A thousand beams and they're all so dry
It's only a matter of minutes until I die

Okay so here come the firemen
Looking so smart with their helmets on
They can't find the fire I smell
So the trucks depart and the neighbors go back to sleep
