Song Description

This story depicts a cemetery caretaker. This guy is a loner that takes pride in his work of taking care of the past, (departed). He also has a connection with the creator as he demonstrates in his evening ritual of picking and singing praises after the work is done.

He was leather skinned, tall, slim and meek,
Had an old gruff voice if got him to speak.
Stayed busy taking care of business all day,
particular in doing everything the right way.
just because he was the best, don't rush to go,
cause the resting place is six feet in a hole.

If you dare at night you could hear him play.

Peace came across and heaven came down.
The picking wasn't great, the tune a little off key,
God said do your best, that's good enough for me.

When darkness falls and the last tool is in the shed,
Most folks have already retired to bed.
The night wind whistles through the old willow,
the moonlight touching the cross casting shadow.
You can hear the strum of that old acoustic Martin,
one added to his audience today, over by the fountain.
