Song Description

The story could be interpreted in other ways, but here is the intended storyline. The protagonist has been hurt by someone and consults an astrophysicist to help him escape the entire world and all of humanity in his pain. The astrophysicist, in that matter-of-fact way that scientists do, explains how each of his ideas for escape would not serve his purpose. But she is also lonely and the two find each other in the process.

Story Behind the Song

This was initially written as a dance number, but I decided to give it a more ethereal treatment, consistent with its subject matter.

Lyrics

The Astrophysicist

I asked the astrophysicist to get me to the stars
Put me on a rocket ship and send me off to Mars
She said I couldn't breathe on Mars and that I would still hurt
How an astrophysicist can send me back to Earth

She hurt me, I just want to fly out into space
Somewhere far from the human race
All alone and I won't need her any more

I asked the astrophysicist 'bout life in a back hole
Then I could go so far away to live out life alone
But she said time would almost stop near a black hole for me
And I would be this lonely there for all eternity

Andromeda might be lonely but I don't care
I'll find another galaxy where she's not there
I'll start again with only astrophysics and me

I'm teary-eyed, I'm make-believe
I'm all the things I'll never reach

I asked the astrophysicist to take me to the stars
Put me on a rocket ship and send me off to Mars
She said we couldn't breathe on Mars and that we would still hurt
How an astrophysicist can send me back to Earth

She hurt me, I just want to fly out into space
Somewhere far from the human race
I'll start again with only astrophysics and me

I'm teary-eyed, I'm make-believe
I'm all the things I'll never reach
