Sweet Little Judy

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this reggae-inspired song a long, long time ago when I was playing with some guys in Boston. This was back when reggae was infusing rock music all over the globe--The Clash, The Police, etc., and it also really got under my skin. We never got the chance to play it or rehearse it back in Boston, since the need to make a living had us all going our separate ways--me out to Madison, Wisconsin. Fast forward a couple decades, and I was teaching the cool reggae riff to my son Andrew. When we decided to form Penelope's Thrill, I knew I wanted to record it, but there was just one problem--I'd completely forgotten the lyrics, except for the title and first line. So I wrote entirely new lyrics. --Tim

Sweet Little Judy
Words & music by Timothy Walsh

Sweet little Judy's all alone tonight.
No one comes and no one calls.
She leaves the light on till late at night,
reading novels in her bed.

Sweet little Judy's never one to fight.
Her mother's somewhere in L.A.
She hears the trolleys rumble by at night,
wondering what it's like to be dead.

CHORUS: And I-I know I'm in love with her,
but she don't know my name.
So many people are in love with her,
but Judy's not the same.

Sweet little Judy gets to work on time.
Sharpens pencils at her desk.
She really thinks that her boss is fine,
and he loves her like the rest.

Sweet little Judy takes the green line home,
makes her dinner, cleans the pans.
She sighs and switches the TV on,
slips away to foreign lands.

CHORUS: And I--I know I'm in love with her.... etc.

BRIDGE: Hang on Judy! Can't you see that this won't last.
Hang on Judy! Can't you forget the past?

Sweet little Judy takes her meds on time,
feels so numb, a little blind.
She sees the Brighton doctor twice a month,
and they go tunneling through her mind.

Sweet little Judy takes no joy in life--
been three years since she's tried.
People say she's never been quite right
ever since her sister died.
CHORUS.......
