Song Description

This song was meant for female vocals. Intended, given the playful lyric, as a crowd-pleaser type song, cabaret style, like Lisa Minelli, Peggy Lee, Julie London, etc., would perform in a cabaret setting in the 40s/50s, where the female vocalist interacted, perhaps coquettishly, with male audience members. This is submitted as demo quality. The song could easily be arranged for big band, as well.

For Love

(vocal intro)
It must be fate
I turned too late
to read the book on love.
Though it once flew into my room
just like a little bird would zoom,
it's how elusively it flew out.
Whether high or low,
if I'm struck by cupid's bow,
I'll always drift into this wonderful dreamworld.
Life's one big miscue
of the funny things I do for love!

Why, just the other day
my guru made me pray for love.
Tried ev'ry other look,
read ev'ry crisis book on love.
So no more cheap tokay,
from now on it's beaujolais;
whatever lights the flame.
Such poetry I've learned,
yet the court is still adjourned
on love, I know no shame.

I went to seminars,
I've rented turbocars for love.
I've spread some false reports
that I'm in love with sports for love.
Must I go out at night
with just any troglodyte?
I hope this is not true.
Read ev'ry magazine,
learned that love is byzantine.
These things I'll do for love.

Conferred with grand coquettes,
abandoned cigarettes for love.
A California shrink,
once, chased me in the pink, for love.
Now even you will laugh
when you see my seismograph of love,
I'll take the blame.
Might even make "Who's Who"
with these funny things I do,
I'll never be the same.
Now these are but a few of the funny
things I do for love,
for love,
for love.
