Broadjam Member Reviews

Right from the start the introduction draws the listener into the story. The softness of the vocal fits so nicely with the easy flowing classical guitar. The overall sadness of the story and the regret of the singer comes across so poignantly and will connect with many a lost love listener.
The song definitely brings to mind the folk songs of a bygone era and does the genre justice. Even the lyric seems to be written in manor that would be appropriate for the time frame it harkens back to.

Lyrics

AWAY

When first I beheld my Dee Marie
I were twenty one, she were seventeen
A more comely lass there had never been
When we kissed I knew she were meant for me
But I'd just signed up for a tour at sea
So asked that girl to promise me
And she would so I was happy
Then I sailed myself away

When next I beheld my Dee Marie
She were twenty one, I were twenty fieve
When she ran to me she were wild and free
When I took her hand down on bended knee
Found another had taken her from me
Tore the heart right out of me
Wished her all the happiness that could be
Then I cast myself away

Away, Away
Where there is no light of day
Where the darkness swells
Like a boiling sea
Where there is no hope
And there is no peace
And I cast myself away

When next I beheld my Dee Marie
She were bouncing a baby upon her knee
Then that bouncing babe were followed by three
Called me Uncle Jack, but they could not see
That my love for them was the love for She
And though I loved those little wees
I knew my love could never be
I hid my love away

At last I beheld my Dee Marie
Dressed in deepest black in her widow weeds
In her time of grief she would cling to me
With her head hung down and her tears flown free
Seemed the time were wrong for me to be happy
Sure she'd melt as if she were one with me
Then I thought I would take her willingly
But my heart was torn away

Now I lie beside my Dee Marie
Buried six-feet deep neath the evergreens
In eternal peace, in eternal dreams
Where love flows like wine, and the spirits free
To sail hand in hand dancing like it were always day
And I pray that way we will always stay

Away, Away
To a light brighter than the day
To the end of time
Where it starts again
And the second time
I will take her hand
And no man take her
Away
