Song Description

The original How Great Thou Art was a poem put to a Swedish folk song by Carl Gustav Boberg in 1885. This explains some of the dissonance of the modern Hymn that has made it unpopular with Choirboys. Having wrestled with this Boberg (who also wrote Amazing Grace) in my youth, I decided that the original poem was more about Art than God, and so in deference to Boberg, created this Artist's Hymn, which asks not How Great is your God, but How Great is your Art?

Lyrics

HOW GREAT THOU ART

Something inside of me's died
Or maybe it's only a break
I set adrift on the tide
The ocean's too wide to escape

And I don't want to work
for a living
And I doubt everything
I believe in
Am I just passing through without leaving
No trace

Inside the horrible fears
Are welling the tears
to my eyes
Outside I flow with the tide
I follow the fall
and the rise
And I know you might think I'm just lazy
Throw me a line
trying to save me
And I try to fit in
but there may be
No place

On the face of the earth
Fall the tears
Broken hearts
They've been crying for years
For the sake of their art
Broken and bloodied
Awaiting their part
The hope for redemption
How great thou art
How great thou art?

I guess it's true
what they say
You can't turn away
and go home
I feel I'm
lost in the fog
A dog searching for
buried bones
And I ask myself
what am I doing?
Looking for life in the ruins
And I wonder if I will get through and
How great thou art
How great thou art?
