The Orchids

Story Behind The Song

I experienced a devastating break up with a girl in London and moved to New York shortly afterwards. I would often look out across the ocean and wonder how she was doing. I felt a very sense deep of longing a the time and this song is what I would sing to myself when I thought of her. I used the song to express the heartache I felt and to proclaim my undying love for her.

Song Description

A classic 1920's french cinema is felt throughout the song as a guitar melody is first accompanied by sounds of the Ocean. The chord changes are unique and engaging as the voice of poet Victor Hugo enters reciting "Demain, dès l'aube." Following shortly is a soft but clear English male vocal. Words are well pronounced with a type of old radio sound used. The tune is simple, memorable, and the accompanying music seems to swell in parts. Enraptured with melancholy with a paradoxical feeling of grandeur and serenading but only to oneself.

Lyrics

Demain, dès l'aube, à l'heure où blanchit la campagne,
Je partirai. Vois-tu, je sais que tu m'attends.
J'irai par la forêt, j'irai par la montagne.
Je ne puis demeurer loin de toi plus longtemps.

I'll watch the ships upon the ocean,
Watch the sun as it fades at the end of the day,
for the ocean is where my heart will land,
The Ocean, The Ocean in my hand,

And I'll shut the blinds and draw the curtains
For in this loneliest room is just where I'll pray
And I know, I know I'll pray for you.
For my Hear, my heart belongs to you.

Je marcherai les yeux fixés sur mes pensées,
Sans rien voir au dehors, sans entendre aucun bruit,
Seul, inconnu, le dos courbé, les mains croisées,
Triste, et le jour pour moi sera comme la nuit.

I'll never dance among the orchids,
but it's now that I sway through your different shades
for the orchids will only grow for you
The orchids, never they are in bloom

and when your lips have turned to paper
when your eye sight fades and your hair turns grey
I know, I know I'll play the fool
For I am just a fool for you

Je ne regarderai ni l'or du soir qui tombe,
Ni les voiles au loin descendant vers Harfleur,
Et quand j'arriverai, je mettrai sur ta tombe
Un bouquet de houx vert et de bruyère en fleur.

So take your chance across the border,
for if your luck should change then come what may
for I know, I know that I may loose,
When I roll, roll a dice for you

So throw your cards upon the table,
Gamble all that you know because even though
I roll a dice for you, I'm a hand
Oh I'm a hand
A hand you'll never loose.
