Sweet Little Gray-Haired Lady

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this song for a sweet little gray-haired lady named Ruby Smith, a shut-in I used to visit. I went to bless her, but she blessed me far more with her sweet and gentle spirit, her prayers and her closeness to Jesus.

Song Description

This is a tribute to a little old lady, delving into her past, empathizing with her pain, and rejoicing in her certain eternal future with God.

Lyrics

Sweet little gray-haired lady
Sitting very still
Sweet little gray-haired lady
Tell me what you will.

What was it like when you were ten?
Were there many cars back then?
Did your mama dress you in long skirts?
Did your button-up shoes ever hurt?

Sweet little gray-haired lady
Peace shines from your face
Sweet little gray-haired lady
Blessed by God's grace.

What was it like when you met Him?
When He freed your heart from sin?
How did He change you way back then?
Tell me, sister, what's within.

Sweet little gray-haired lady
What I like to do...Oh..
Sweet little gray-haired lady
Sit right here with you

Tell me the treasures of your past
Share how you've remained steadfast
Open the wisdom of your years
Quiet now my youthful fears

Sweet little gray-haired lady
Child of the King
Sweet little gray-haired lady
O what joy you bring.

Someday your joy will be complete
When you sit at Jesus' feet
All your pain forgotten now
At His throne you'll smile and bow

Sweet little gray-haired lady
Faithful to the King
Sweet little gray-haired lady
O what joy you bring
O what joy you bring
Faithful to....the King.

Simple folk melody beautifully sung with a very nice acoustic accompaniment.

A beautiful well written folk song. Well produced with strong vocal delivery. Crystal clear delivery. Well done.

Oh what a lovely, simple song!
Superb Vocals with delightful harmony.
Sung with such clarity!
Almost see it in a Cosy Movie!
The light guitar backing suited your song ideally!

This song is lovely, innocent and reminds me of the great Mrs. Kate 'round these parts, who usually writes children's tunes, which this could serve as well, I love the simplicity, honesty and other than the religious stuff, I love this tune...well done!

I enjoyed the simplicity of this track and the acoustic arrangement suited the subject matter. The lyrics were well written and the vocals are excellent. The harmonies also worked well.
More please.

You have a lovely voice, pure and on pitch! Your guitar work was good! This song could be used for a Sunday School, or Christian TV for kids. Perhaps if you made a transition between the little old lady and the child your singing to within the song it would have greater effect on the child because it would relate to them directly.

We all know we can count on you to bring it.....

Of course the subject matter may not appeal to a younger generation, but I'm seasoned (old) and really appreciate it. The simple guitar/vocal works for me with this song.

Well, the good news I have for you, is that you sing beautifully, and you have a fantastic ear for melodies, and your vocals sound clear and crisp, you obviously sing in church choir or have some kind of training. I think the arrangement of the song was very well done, and even though I was not a fan of the content or the lyrics, or hook, I have to give props to the originality, the arrangement, and the instrumentation/recording.

Very cool sounding Christian Song, sounds a lot like Ms. Kate - beautiful lyrics and vocals.

a nice folk track , very well performed , nice theme and style. liked the minimal backing it really suits the track.
good backing vocals in the mix just right

Very cool and refreshing tune. Asks all the same questions I think we've all asked of our elders. Great vocal pitch.

Nice solid performance in a classic folk format.

What a lovely song. Nice vocal performance and steady guitar accompaniment throughout. Beautiful story, very heartfelt and sincere. I thoroughly enjoyed this song.

a very nice "menuet"(in french)
