Google It - The Smart Phone Song

Story Behind The Song

Being born in 1953, I've seen everything from dial phones to smart phones and everything in between. Now that I own a smart phone, I am amazed at all it can do, so I decided to write a song about it.

Song Description

What would Alexander Graham Bell do if he could see the Smart Phone and all it can do? He'd be doing a flip in his grave. Have a tough time solving math problems? The Smart Phone can help you with that. But watch out! Don't check your brains at the door, and remember to pay attention to the people and kids you are with. Don't let your phone take over your life and relationships.

Lyrics

I know a man who's doin' a flip, doin' a flip in his grave
Alexander Graham Bell.... If only he could be here today
And see just what his phone has become! Smarter than a Ph.d.
Just swipe the screen and ask away. You don't have to know how to read!
CHORUS: Just Google it! Schmoogle it! Bamboozle it!
Why bother learning on your own? Just ask your little phone!

When I was a kid, I struggled with math. I busted my brains in that class.
Addition, subtraction, long division. My parents were proud when I passed.
But now it's a cinch; when I'm in a pinch, I whip out my prodigy.
I swipe the screen and ask away. I think I forgot how to think!
CHORUS: I Google it! Schmoogle it! Bamboozle it!
Why solve the problem on your own? Just ask your little phone.

BRIDGE: Well who strives anymore? Take a trip to the smart phone store.
Sign your name on the line. You better pay your bill on time.
Swipe the screen; ask away. Cuz Siri is here to stay!

Goodbye, Books! Goodbye, Maps! So long, Tapes and CD's.
Gone are the days when people took walks to stare at the sky and trees.
But isn't it tragic, with all this magic, we neglect our kids on the swings?
"Hey watch me, Mom! " "Come push me, Dad!" But the parents just stare at their screens.
CHORUS: They Google it, Schmoogle it, Bamboozle it!
With all this technology, we're losin' it.
C'mon, get a life of your own!
Yank yourself out of that zone!
Some things are best overthrown.
Please learn when to turn off your phone!

Relatable theme between the generations -- nicely done -- well written lyrically -- I like the musical approach being almost musical theater-like and old-style piano parlor vibe--- I can picture a scene in a play choreographed and being supported by this song --- vocals great, arrangement great, instrumentation and recording great. Unique song but it might find a commercial home somewhere---

I love the song. Too bad we don't have more of the big bands of the 30s and 40s, or the Chordettes style of music proliferating as a market right now. Really great vocals and workmanship!

Fun boogie-woogie tune exploring our modern-day fascination/obsession with search engines. A bit of a whimsical and "sad" look at how things have changed... from writing letters to sending texts... libraries to search engines... and the funny names that adorn our "new" ways of find information.

The vocals and arrangement provide the whimsy to this one. The straightforward arrangement and production allow is to focus on the lyrics/message. The piano performance is upbeat and strong. And the violin provides a nice counter melody/mood. Well played... pardon h pun!

I could easily see this used in a broadway-esque stage performance, and/or a specific film/video application. Nice work!

Never would have heard this...
...were it not for this phone.

A charming, thoroughly entertaining piece, and a most relevant social commentary for these times, in song form. A perfect vocal delivery for this sort of thing. And the fiddle and piano accompaniment ... oolala!! Appropriate conterpoint to the subject matter.

Kudos indeed all around!!

Oh my gosh! Here comes the Jetsons in phoney phone spacey techno land in a contemporary message set with a retro style pop tune you might find in 60s commercials! That's delightfully hard to beat! What a setting for the mindless techno conveniences of the 2020s versus the yesteryear of the 60s through the 90s! The rollicking piano and vocal harmonies are fun and corny, and you'll wonder whatever happened to those days when people survived without being so networked!

I like the boogie woogie sound on the piano, very cool. Very modern take on an old theme, that life moves along and changes too quickly sometimes. A good novelty song well done.

I could definitely see this song playing in a show like The Marvelous Mrs Maisel or Mad Men etc... This is so playful and a pleasure to listen to. When the harmonies hit I got shivers- so good.

Ya did it again.......always good stuff

Fun tune enjoyed the old time feel

Is that you Kate? Love the message.....I rail on cell phones regularly! This is so well written! Production/arrangement are excellent, as is the vocal! A quality song all the way!!

Love the 40's kind of jazz vibe going on here. This reminds me of olden times saloons. :)

I thought this song had a nice feel. I liked the overall musicianship and your use of dynamics. The recording quality was top notch. To me it truly sounded like you used real instruments in this production--which is always a big plus with me. I thought the song was organized well--the different sections transitioned well throughout.
