When Johnny Comes Marching Home

Story Behind The Song

This is for those who have fallen in the line of duty and and their families.

Song Description

This is the "sad-time" version of the Civil War folk song about a hometown soldier coming home after being injured in the war. This version gives a feeling that the soldier may not be coming home alive, and that the celebration is more of a homecoming memorial rather than a happy homecoming reunion.

Lyrics

When Johnny comes (marching) home agaim
Hurrah, Hurrah
We'll give him a hearty welcome then
Hurrah, Hurrah
The men will cheer, the boys will shout
The ladies, they will all turn out
He'll be here to stay
When Johnny comes home

The old church bell with joy
Hurrah, Hurrah
To welcome home our darling boy
Hurrah, Hurrah
The village lads and lassies say
With roses they will show the way
And he'll be here to stay
When Johnny comes home

Get ready for the Jubilee
Hurrah, Hurrah
We'll give the hero three times three
Hurrah, Hurrah
The laurel wreath is ready now
To place upon his loyal brow
He'll be here to stay
When Johnny comes home
