Story Behind The Song
After returning home from the Passion of the Christ with my wife one night in early March, I had a really heavy heart. This son of a preacher has always lived up the sterotype when it came to rebellion and the like. I have been returning slowly to my roots and found a need to express my feelings in song. Finding plenty of people and stories to draw from was simple, in fact which personalities to leave out were more of an issue. I settled on using my dog I lost as a child (not to a car but to an accidental hanging...please don't ever tie down a dog, especially near a wood fence if the dog is a jumper). The soldier was simple, our boys keep our dreams and families alive, and the Son of Man, to Whom we owe a debt we will never be able to actaully repay in full. Ironically and as stated in the bridge, it's the selflessness that came from the Christ that can be found in anyone who without a thought would risk life and limb to protect me, my family, and my genus. To all of these I dedicate this song.

Lyrics
Down an old dirt road
It was just before dark
I had to lighten my load
I never even heard him bark
He must have seen that gravel flyin'
In the end I sat there cryin'....cause
He died for me
Threw caution to the wind to save my life
He was my best friend and that's the reason why
He didn't bat an eye
Then he gave out one last sigh
And, he died for me
He didn't really want to go
When his orders came that day
But it's his job to hold the line
That's what all good soldiers say
When his convoy hit the hardpan
He volunteered to be the odd man
He died for me
Went half way 'cross the world to give his life
Can't imagine how it feels to be his wife
Full of pain and pride
He's a hero in my eyes
He died for me
In a world ruled by hate we're looking for love
Then we finally find out that it comes from above
I've never even seen His face
But I talk to Him at night
I've found shelter in His grace
I know His passion and His plight
And though He's never met me
He promised He would not forget me
He died for me
I know down in my heart it's not the end
Up there on that cross He took my sin
Then the sky went dim
In His blood I'm cleansed
He died for me
