Lie the Most, Love the least

Story Behind The Song

Why does the world belong to those that lie the most, and those that love the least? I couldn't answer that question so instead I made the question itself into the song, and found it was more powerful that way. I had just started writing a few songs in open c tuning (cgcgce) - and tried dropping the thin e-string a half step (eflat) which gave me a c-minor tuning. Out of it came the progression you hear in the song.

Song Description

Slide guitar in c-minor tuning, soul singing. Why does the world belong to those that lie the most, and those that love the least? Those chorus lines ring out into a quiet riff on the acoustic guitar, just after the chorus itself has peaked. All the angst and anger of the chorus just turns to sadness for the end. The verses pull from our collective (conscious or unconscious) knowledge of the Old and the New Testament. I wanted to turn the rhetoric around a little bit, and ask whether mixing politics and religion is such a good idea.

Lyrics

You say you know Jesus
how can that be true?
Don't stick me any reasons
that don't apply to you
You push him in front
- you like to use his name
to hide what you do
so you don't get to take the blame

People need to come together
but what you preach is hate
Now more than ever
the hour is late
Got despair all around us
it's a time to be reacing out
Time the world saw some leaders
that worked to do it proud

Welcome to the realm of broken dreams
A change may come but nothing's what it seems
Why does the world belong to those that lie the most
and those that love the least -
Why does the world belong to those that lie the most
and those that love the least?
Lie the most, Love the least

Every generation has its liar
that cuvets the throne
It's own false Messiah
that's rotten to the bone
He will push to the front
but once you hail his name
He'll use all of that power
to set the world in flames

Welcome to the realm of broken dreams
A change may come but nothing's what it seems
Why does the world belong to those that lie the most
and those that love the least -
Why does the world belong to those that lie the most
and those that love the least?

Lie the most, Love the least

Why does the world belong to those that lie the most
and those that love the least?

Lie the most, Love the least
Lie the most, Love the least
Lie the most, Love the least...
