Story Behind The Song
Much of this song was written actually on the road. We had come up with something of a musical template in advance; and I was doing a road trip back to Colorado from Minnesota with a busted radio/CD and an air conditioner which was on the verge of giving up its ghost. Middle of July. Perfect weather and perfect setting to write the lyrics . . . the only thing which was working well was a pocket tape recorder. There's nothing like getting passed regularly by nice, well appointed cars, when you are trying to coax a junker a distance of one thousand miles in the company of two very irritable teenagers. By the time we hit Omaha, the song was really coming together, and I found myself not noticing the discomforts of the trip. By the time we got back to Boulder, all of the words and melody were exactly as they are here, with the exception of the bridge which Bob and I tinkered with for the next month or so.

Song Description
This song is about leaving . . . but you might get the sense that the process of leaving will always be in the future . . . i.e., "one of these" days I'm gonna leave etc. And the singer is not leaving just anybody; she is preparing to leave someone who may well not notice that she's gone . . . because he is so self consumed with, you name it, having the right car, the right this and the right that.

Lyrics
LEAVING
Copyright 2002 by Dennis Wanebo and Bob Story
Chorus one
One of These Days
And it Won?t be Long
When You?re Up and Coming
I?m Up and Gone
Believe Me Darlin?
I Won?t be Leavin? You Alone
Cuz? Your Life is Overcrowded
When You?re On Your Own
Verse One
When You?re on Your Own
You?re Not a Hurtin? Guy
Not Even By a Longshot
Not Even By and By
Every One of Your Cars
Has Got Vanity Plates
So the Guy in the KIA
Won?t Just See Ya?
He?s Gonna Know
That You Really Rate
Verse Two
When You?re on Your Own
You Won?t Miss Me That Bad
I?ll Be Like That Daydream
You?re Not Sure You Had
You Got All the Right Things
You Got Your Fortunate Fame
I Think It?s All Agreed
That?s Everything You Need
Except Maybe Someone to Blame
Chorus
But One of These Days
And it Won?t be Long
When You?re Up and Coming
I?m Up and Gone
Believe Me Darlin?
I Won?t be Leavin? You Alone
Cuz? Your Life is Overcrowded
When You?re On Your Own
Bridge
Cuz One of These Days
Is Comin? Your Way
I Wouldn?t Waste My time
Wouldn?t Try to Change
When One?s Sublime
There?s Nothin? Left to Arrange
Just Don?t Think That I?m
Gonna Stay in Your Game
The Picture?s Out of the Frame
The Target?s Out of Your Range
One of These Days
It?s Comin? Outta the Grey
I?m Gonna Hit That Screen Door
I?m Goin? Out to Play
One of These Days
One of These Days
One of These Days
One of These Days
