Song Description

Marlowe recorded a rock opera, Hell, based on Dante's Inferno. "Nothing" is about the dead spirits of rock and roll that live in hell, alluding to Elvis (the king), Freddy Mercury (Queen), Lennon (in my life), Kurt Cobain (I lie in the soil...), Jim Morrison (nobody has ever...), and Jimi Hendrix (was i experienced). While the royalty of rock may have been The King, the real royalty is all that money that rolls in once the rocker kicks it.

Story Behind the Song

Happens every time. Like I says, you're worth more dead than alive.

Lyrics

Cries fill up the hills and the canyons
They're salvaging the wasted spirits of the dead
the wafer is cracked and the wine's full of tannin
a crown of thorns is balanced on His head

well there's nothing here in this heart
nothing worth saving once fallen apart
nothing here in this heart
advice that i needed i could never heed it

i lie in the soil and fertilize mushrooms
nobody has ever gotten out alive
well was i experienced or just bored and indifferent
either way i'm lonely and deprived

well there's nothing here in this heart
nothing worth saving once fallen apart
nothing here in this heart
advice that i needed i could never heed

in my life, the King and the Queen
in my life, have fallen between
the cracks in the gutter
where idiots stutter
the royalty was splendid
once tragedy had ended

and there's nothing here in this heart
nothing worth saving once fallen apart
nothing here in this heart
advice that i needed i could never heed it
