Virginia Clay

Story Behind The Song

Virginia has very specific red clay, and is where I grew up. I had to move to California to escape some demons there, which drew me back into old habits, old groups of people I didn't really want to be a part of, but couldn't escape somehow.

Song Description

Like an old sweater that you can't bear throwing out or donating, there are people and places that follow and haunt you. Despite the real effort to change, when you are around those people and places, you fall back into old, potentially unhealthy habits.

Lyrics

Virginia Clay
I woke up from a restless dream the other day
Upon my knees and elbows deep in old Virginia clay.
My hands were canyons, cracked and red and crumbling away
And I looked up to no one with nothing to say.
You never fit me well enough, no matter how I change.
You never fit me well enough, so I'm gone away.
You are that old sweater, not blue but not quite gray.
Tucked in the bottom drawer and I can't throw you away.
You never fit me well enough, no matter how I change.
You never fit me well enough, so I'm gone away.
In this filthy far away you tell me, "Baby get in line, get in line."
Silly silent reprimand but I think, I think I'll stay, stay, stay...
You are that old sweater, (every letter) not blue but still not gray.
Shoved in the bottom drawer and I won't throw you away.
You never fit me well enough, no matter how I change. (You know I tried to change.)
You never fit me well enough, so I'm gone away.
