my savior fled with the rent

Story Behind The Song

I had long wanted to write a song about a savior who bleeds the resources from those he's saving, who in turn need to be saved from the grasp of their savior.

Song Description

The singer has fallen sucker for a phony guru, like a Jim & Tammy Fay Baker, or the latest swami, and has wised up too late. Still, he can't help feeling sorry for the jerk who took him for a ride

Lyrics

My savior said he was going away.
I found it hard not to shout out hooray!
He was an odd bird, flying on bean curd,
Went levitating when the bill came to pay.
He took my money and I'm missing my dog,
It was as easy as a fall from a log.
His healing touch left me broken and bent,
Lent him my bed and he fled with the rent

When I first laid eyes upon my savior
He was wearing stolen shoes,
And the tracks he made were down and dirty,
Guess I missed some easy clues.

He goes for three when there's only two tries.
He tells his truth through a blizzard of lies.
He's had to handle more than one scandal.
No one has seen him when he wasn't sky high.
He mumbles something that we all strain to hear
But what it was is never made very clear,
And though they claim that from heaven he's sent:
Lent him my bed and he fled with the rent.

He wore glasses rimmed with jewels and diamonds,
Mended with a paper clip.
Got them from a wealthy blue-haired heiress
For a round-the-world trip.

He's low on luck, he requires quite a bit.
His devotees are all having a fit.
It didn't last long before it went wrong,
And now the Sherif has showed up with a writ.
It seems a good bet he'll be locked in a cell
Ain't that the way when things were going so well?
He's on the lam and he hasn't a cent.
Lent him my bed and he fled with the rent.

He said that he was feeling low.
He'd never been this low before,
And if he had to take much more,
He'd die, yes, he'd die.
He said he knew I'd understand,
Sometimes a savior needs a hand.
He had to score just one last grand, or die.
I'm a fool for midnight pleas,
And for saviors on their knees,
Won't somebody save me please,
From my savior?
