Broken Chain

Story Behind The Song

A guy likens his tired, beat up relationship to his old truck, upon which he spends all his time. He wants to lose the wedding ring hanging round his neck - and the relationship, so he prays for a broken chain. He gets a broken chain... but not the one he had in mind. The tow chain on the wrecker truck that's towing him breaks on the interstate and he wrecks the truck, hurting himself also. Coming to his senses, he realises what's important in life, buys a new truck and goes home to rekindle his relationship, and spend time fixing it, rather than the old truck. He muses that although his prayers are answered, he gets what he needs rather than what he wants. It's a case of 'be careful what you wish for'.

Lyrics

BROKEN CHAIN

We're just like my old pick up truck
Cranky, worn and bang outta' luck
The seats are threadbare & we ain't been gettin' nowhere
We're mortal dangers, up on bricks
Bad cold startin' that missing won't fix
I've dragon wagoned around here some
I've done my best like anyone, but

Oh, oh - It's become a struggle and a fight
Oh, oh - I just want to park & ride

I got tires and radiators
Aircons, hubs, accelerators
Stuff around enough to build a plane
Got a wedding ring around my neck
The weakest link is all that's left
I've prayed everything that heaven could bring
For a broken chain
For a broken chain

That wagon and me done a half million miles
Since I bought her to win you 'cross three state lines
The trucks days are through so I've time for you
And it's fixing us that's due
My wounds need attention - when I tell, you'll see
Got Divine intervention, a new truck & low bank fees
Don't need a body kit no more
Cause' the prettiest skirt's stood outside my door

Oh, oh - There'll be more than a wheel in my hands tonight
Oh, Oh - New truck, make up, honey let's get wild
Cause'

I got tires and radiators
Aircons, hubs, accelerators
Stuff around enough to build a plane
I wiped out getting' towed, thank God I'm alive
'Cause the wrecker snapped a link doing 75
There was pickup shrapnel clear across 8 lanes
For a broken chain

I call heaven
If my prayer gets taken
I guess the good Lord sees
I'm not given what I want...but what I need

I got tires and radiators
Aircons, hubs, accelerators
Stuff around enough to build a plane
But my favorite part is I'm still with you
Guess the good Lord done what I asked him to
I wasn't sent what I meant
But I'm sure glad that I prayed
For a broken chain

I got tires and radiators
Aircons, hubs, accelerators
Stuff around enough to build a plane
Now my wedding ring's closer to my chest
And the weakest link was that tow chain wreck
Brought us back together
But I won't pray again
For a broken chain
For a broken chain
