Dialogue with Joan of Arc

Story Behind The Song

I was spending time with my mother and my sister in our family's winter cabin in the woods. We had not adjusted the flue properly on our new, wood-burning stove; therefore, smoke was slowly backing up into the house and collecting in the den room. Coincidentally, I decided to watch Ingrid Bergman in the movie "Joan of Arc." In the final scene of the movie, Ingrid/Joan is being burned at the stake accused of being a witch. There's smoke all around her in the movie and there's smoke in the den room of our cabin. Ingrid Bergman tilts her angelic face towards heaven and says, "Please, God, give me strength." I turn to my sister and say, "I know just how she feels."

Dialogue with Joan of Arc

I know just how you feel,
Standing there all alone
Oh, your hands are tied and smoky eyes
And you wanna go home
I know, just how you feel

So you know just how I feel?
I see you?ve been burned before
There?s a voice inside,
Consumes my life
And no one else can hear it
No, you don?t know, just how I feel

Now, I am not a saint
Though I?ve been called a witch before
Sister, let me tell you something here
After five hundred years
Nothing?s changed

Do not be afraid
Do not let them get the best of you
From these ashes,
From these broken flames
Love will rise again

Pay no attention to the man behind that curtain
Like some old B-rate movie
The smoke is just illusion
To see how clear is your vision
That voice inside

So dream all you dreamers into this fiery night
A thousand voices will sing with you
We can hear it, we can feel it
We are standing here with you

Father, Brother, Sister, Dear Sweet Mother
Yes, we are, we are here
We are standing next to you,
You?re not alone
I know, just how you feel
