Oblivious

Story Behind The Song

This song was written while making casual observations at a park in Austin, Texas. It's a reflection of how we ignore the simple things that make life wonderful, and how we often take life for granted. At the park that day the clear blue sky was beautifully picturesque. I was sitting in front of a black water wall just watching people walk by and the lyrics just kind of fell into place. The third verse came to me later while I was at home reflecting on that day. I realized that I'm just as guilty as everyone else of not appreciating the simple things in life that surround me.

Lyrics

Above my eyes in a clear blue sky
The sun is shining bright
And down below where green grass grows
I see people walk on by

They're totally oblivious
They don't seem to care
They don't stop to smell the roses
They seem unaware

As water falls down a black stone wall
Like rain from the sky
It makes a sound as it hits the ground
But people walk on by

They're totally oblivious
They don't seem to care
They don't stop to smell the roses
They seem unaware

People take a look and see what surrounds you
A perfect world this will never be
Before it's too late we can come together
Let's try to make the most of it.

They're totally oblivious
They don't seem to care
They don't stop to smell the roses
They seem unaware

Up in my room I'm the prophet of doom
But what do I know
I'm just the same and I need to change
Because I'm oblivious also

We're totally oblivious
We seem to pay no mind
Let's slow down and take a look around
Who knows what we'll find

We're totally oblivious
We seem unaware
We don't stop to smell the roses
We don't even care
