Be Your Own Woman

Song Description

The singer is talking to the woman in his life. Things haven't gone the way they planned in their relationship. They have tried to work things out, but it is now clear that one of them would have to change too much to make it work. If they did that, then neither of them would be true to themselves, and that would not work either. He wants her to be herself, to be her own woman, and If he tried to change, he would no longer be the person she had fallen in love with. They have to face up to the hard truth, the pain, that they are going to have to go their own ways.

Lyrics

BE YOUR OWN WOMAN
by Lew Bridgewater

Country Blues

VERSE 1
I?m not into games
When it comes down to matters of the heart
We know when it?s right, we know when it ain?t
And we know how to tell the two apart
Sometimes the tick of time can seem like forever
If your heart is hanging on by a strand
You gotta be your own woman
I gotta be my own man

VERSE 2
Love is never easy
So it?s gotta be built upon the truth
We know when it?s real, we know when it ain?t
And we always know what we oughta do
Sometimes the nickel-and-dime problems we have
Can tear apart all of our plans
You gotta be your own woman
I gotta be my own man

CHORUS 1
You gotta be your own woman
I wouldn?t have it any other way
And if I was anything but who I am
You wouldn?t want me anyway
Well, things don?t always work out
Exactly like we plan
You gotta be your own woman
I gotta be my own man

VERSE 3
No reason to be ashamed
There?s no need for apologies
A part of me knows that a part of me goes
When you and I are no longer we
Sometimes these modern times can be like a storm
When relationships are built on sand
But you gotta be your own woman
I gotta be my own man

CHORUS 2
You gotta be your own woman
You gotta be true to yourself
We gotta make the tough decisions
We can?t put it on the shelf
?Cause things don?t always work out
Exactly like we plan, oh no?
You gotta be your own woman
I gotta be my own man

You gotta be your own woman
I gotta be my own man
