Story Behind The Song
I wrote this song while on the road with my travelling band. We lived week to week, gig to gig, dollar to dollar. I think I went for 3 years without buying one stitch of new clothing. I would practice my guitar all day in my hotel room and play gigs at night. One summer it seemed like we played every desert town in California and Nevada. We would get off work at 2 a.m. and it would still be 110 degrees. They were the best and worst of times and I wouldn't trade 'em for anything!
Song Description
Road musicians often suffer through poverty, broken down vehicles, nasty club owners, loading and maintaining all their own equipment, driving all night to get to the next town, missing their loved ones back home, sacrificing everything...always keeping that dream of success alive in their hearts.

Lyrics
I?ve got 19 dollars and a beat up guitar
A couple of beers in the trunk of my car
And six hundred miles to grease
Before the start of the show
Grind a few more gears outa this old clutch
Kiss my baby goodbye, can I rub you for luck
And hope that you?ll wait for me ?til I get back home
Well we?re one step short of makin? it big
Just a little more time and a couple of gigs
One step short of being a star
Yeah, we?re one step short of falling apart
I should get a new couch and a washing machine
But every penny I make goes into this dream
And it?s a little too late to turn back now
I?ve been to the wall and ready to quit
Shed more tears than I care to admit
But this rock & rollin? life is all my heart will allow
Well we?re one step short of makin? it big
Just a little more time and a couple of gigs
One step short of being a star
Yeah, we?re one step short of falling apart
It?s a hundred and ten in the desert tonight
We?re gonna pack up the trucks and drive ?til it?s light
Lord knows when we?ll be back again
Oh yeah, we?re one step short of makin? it big
Just a little more time and a couple of gigs
One step short of being a star
Yeah, we?re one step short of falling apart
One step short
