Lyrics

Isaiah 58:6-8

Day by day you turn away
From stuff we've seen before
A man who's cold, and tired and old;
You pass by him once more.
I know the excuses, I've used them myself.
Still, have we nothing to share?

We live ourselves with bursting shelves
While people die each day.
How can you share God's 'Love' and 'Care'
If you lock their food away?
I may fast, I may pray:'God save them today!'
But still, they are cold and unloved.

Is not this the kind of fasting that I want?
To break the chains of injustice
Set the prisoners free
Give shelter to the homeless
Feed the hungry
And your light will break forth like the dawn

On the day you fast, it does not last
You bicker and you fight.
How can you pray as you do today
And expect to see the light?
Oh, how can you say 'Why no answer when I pray?'
When you give no answer to the poor?

Is not this the kind of fasting that I want?
To break the chains of injustice
Set the prisoners free
Give shelter to the homeless
Feed the hungry
And your light will break forth like the dawn
