Salt Shaker

Story Behind The Song

A child's home memory of a very suave father who loved jazz and to dancing and would sometimes grab his mom and start dancing with her in the home. He was known for salting the floor, an old trick back in the 40's to help one dance more smoothly. This song was unknowingly and ironically written on the couples anniversery!

Lyrics

Throw open all the windows, spring day, fresh air breathe!
Put some Basie on the box, let it float into the street!
I'm watching cartoons then I see dad start to swing,
grab mama's hand, into the air her dust rag flings!

CHORUS:
That man can glide, as though on ice,
mom stood back discreetly he'd pull that
salt shaker from his pocket, watch him swing
he's really got it! he hasn't a care, he's floating on air!
but only when there's some salt on the floor!

Suave and sophisticated, he knows every move,
big band blow those horns, you really cop a groove!
the man is so dignified he moves like a dream,
he walks with distinction but he flows like a stream!
