Montgomery's Hill

Story Behind The Song

I lived in South Florida several years ago and it was very flat. There was an empty lot across the street and someone eventually built a house on it. They filled the lot and built it up to about 4 feet higher than the surrounding lots. The guy that bought the house was named Montgomery. He was a very neat person, a Georgia redneck and proud of it. He even flew a rebel flag in the front yard. He didn't have any kids so on Friday nights his place became the hang out in the neighborhood. Women would come hunting down the men and make them go home. It was quite comical. My two children would always ask me if they could go play on Montgomery's hill - they would roll down it for a mere two seconds and then get up and do it again. It was really kind of sad that it was the biggest hill they had ever played on. Anyway, I found it comical that Montgomery's Hill was such a small incline because it sounded like some place up in the rolling foothills in the mountains or something. I told Montomery I was going to write about it and I did. I hope you like it.

Song Description

Montgomery's Hill is a nice peaceful place, kind of a rolling green hillside where one can go to kick back, enjoy a beautiful day and unwind. The kids like to go play there in the daytime and it's just a nice place to go. However, on Friday nights, people like to go up there and play some music and drink a little beer and just hang out. Momma knows about this place and it's said you can have a lot of fun until she comes around and breaks up all of the fun.

Lyrics

MONTGOMERY?S HILL

In the light of the moon on a Friday night
My mama and papa got into a fight
Papa came home he was drinkin? again
He?d been partying down with a few of his friends

Mama got mad and hit him with a pan
Put a knot on his head so he couldn?t even stand
She said you ain?t leavin? so you better sit still
and you better stay away from Montgomery?s Hill
Better stay away from Montgomery?s Hill

Montgomery?s Hill is a rolling green
It?s the biggest one around that you ever did see
Where the blue birds sing and the kids like to play all day
But on Friday night it?s the partying spot
Where the beer runs cold and the music is hot
They say you can have a real good time until
Mama comes a calling, on Montgomery?s Hill.

I remember last spring in the afternoon
My sister and her boyfriend were skipping school
They went up to the hill just to hang around
But it wasn?t very long before they were found.

Mama caught them kissing in the afternoon sun
and She chased the boy off with an old shot gun
She said you better run or you?re gonna get killed
And you better stay away from Montgomery?s Hill
Better stay away from Montgomery?s Hill.

Chorus: (Repeat)

There?s the time little brother found a magazine
Unlike any other he had ever seen
He stuck it in his jacket and took it up there
Sat down by a stump and he read it with care

He never heard her coming when she grabbed him from behind
But he knew she was mad by the glare in her eyes
I remember as she whipped him I can hear her still
You better stay away from Montgomery?s Hill
Better stay away from Montgomery?s Hill

Chorus: (Repeat)
