Afraid and Alone

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this tune in the spring of 04, and subsequently recorded it for my debut album entitled "It's About Time." I had the verse chord progression since highschool, but never really went anywhere with it. The original idea was a balad in 4/4, but was abandoned. When I was at a program on Martha's vineyard for artists in 03, I wrote a halfbaked song, trying to incorporate this verse progression, this time in 6/8. The verse words were different, terrible to say the least. The chorus was a completely different idea, again. Terrible. Later that semester at that program, I wrote the chorus you hear now, put it up against the verse chords, wrote a quick prechorus to bridge them together, and we were almost there. In spring of 04, I partnered with Beth Gragg to help me drum up some verses, I wrote a quick bridge, and it was done. I recorded it in 05, and released it in 06 on my debut album. I liken it to a Supertramp meets ELO combination, combined with some heavy hitting modern guitars. I like to mix 70's songwriting techniques with modern production to try and make something exciting.

Lyrics

Verse 1.
Baby there's something that I'd like to say.
And I hope that my words don't get in the way.
But there's something that you aught to know.

How can I explain all this love that I feel.
How do I prove that this heart is for real.
When I hold you close I don't want to let go.

Prechorus.
I can no longer hide,
cause I'm dying inside,
and I'm feeling like I'm gonna fall.

Chorus
If this is a dream then I don't want to wake.
Cause this is a feeling I don't want to shake.
And I can't make it on my own.
I don't want the night turning into the day.
Because I'm afraid this will all fade away.
And I'm left standing,
afraid and alone.

Verse 2.
Sometimes I feel as though I don't deserve,
The love that you give but I'm so reassured,
Whenever you're kissing me there in the dark.

Cause there is a fire that's burning within.
When I feel the passion the room starts to spin.
If you leave I am left with a spark.

Prechorus
You are all I dream of,
but if I can't have your love,
I would rather have nothing at all.

Chorus
If this is a dream then I don't want to wake.
Cause this is a feeling I don't want to shake.
And I can't make it on my own.
I don't want the night turning into the day.
Because I'm afraid this will all fade away.
And I'm left standing,
afraid and alone.

Bridge
Stay around.
I would give anything to hold you hear in my arms.
What I've found,
is something incredible.
Baby you're beautiful.

Chorus
If this is a dream then I don't want to wake.
Cause this is a feeling I don't want to shake.
And I can't make it on my own.
I don't want the night turning into the day.
Because I'm afraid this will all fade away.
And I'm left standing,
afraid and alone.
Afraid and alone.
Afraid and alone.
Afraid and alone.
