Song Description

This song tells the story of a love between two people that spans 65 years. It starts with them being so happy together that all they don't need gifts, just to be able to spend their first Christmas together is enough. Jump ahead 12 years, they now have children. The dad comes home from WWII at Christmas time and he is so excited to see his son. His son's only Christmas wish is to spend it with his dad who he missed so much. Jump ahead 52 years. The couple is still together. They've lived a long life of love, but the man is now very ill and won't be around much longer. The wife is distraught, but all the husband wants to do is spend his last Christmas with the love of his life.

Story Behind the Song

This story was inspired by my grandparents and their love for each other that lasted 65 years. My grandpa passed away around Christmas time years ago, and my grandma has not been the same since.

Lyrics

Christmas Eve, 1932
They've been on thirteen dates,
the start of something new
She can't believe she's standing here today
He just looks at her in awe,
trying to find the words to say
He says what do you want for Christmas?
Wanna get you something nice
She thinks about the one thing that she's wanted all her life

She says Christmas with you
is all I need
Everything is exactly just the way it's meant to be
The love that you bring
is worth one thousand things
All I want is to hold you close and spend my first Christmas with you

Christmas Eve, 1944
Daddy's comin' home tonight
from serving in the war
He can't believe he's standing here tonight
He looks down at the only thing
that kept him alive
He says what do you want for Christmas?
Have you been a good boy?
I know that this sounds crazy dad
But I don't want any toys

Just Christmas with you
is all I need
Everything is exactly just the way it's meant to be
The love that you bring
is worth one thousand things
All I want is to hold you close and to spend this Christmas with you

Christmas Eve, 1996
Nurse says she can see him now,
but he's gotten very sick
She can't believe she's standing here today
She just tries to hold back the tears and find the words to say
She says what do you want for Christmas?
I'll get whatever you like
He just smiles and holds her hand,
and looks her in the eyes
He says I know this isn't fair,
but for the sixty-fifth time
I want the same thing I want every year
So don't leave my side

He says Christmas with you
is all I need
Everything is exactly just the way it's meant to be
The love that you bring
is worth one thousand things
All I want is to hold you close and spend one more Christmas with you
Please just give me one last
Christmas with you
