STATELINE BAR

Ronnie was racing down Boundary Pike
Clocked in about a hundred and five
When he lost the road at Horseshoe curve

The reason why he was running so fast
He'd seen a ghost from his past
Plus he was being pursued by the law

Speculation had run wild
Since Ronnie was a child
There was nothing but trouble he was heading for

Might have been because his mother Lill
Was a girl who liked her thrills
And who his father was no one knew for sure

CHORUS
And so the story goes
No one really knows
But the truth lies in the cards

Better watch your back
Cause they'll stack the deck
Down at the Stateline Bar

If you wanted a game of chance
Or a slow smoky dance
The place to go was the Stateline Bar

The wine they served wasn't fine
Coldest beer for fifty miles
You never told your wife you were going there

Ronnie walked in one afternoon
Seems like it was early June
Jen the barmaid gave him a hopeful smile

Ronnie said Jenny you'll have to wait
It's Friday and I just got paid
Going to try my luck at card's for a little while

CHORUS
And so the story goes
No one really knows
But the truth lies in the cards

Better watch your back
Cause they'll stack the deck
Down at the Stateline Bar

A while later Dapper Dan
Just back from the Yucatan
Rolled into the Stateline Bar

Walked in like he owned the place
Pretty Jenny nearly lost her place
Hypnotized by Dan's wink and his smile

Dan said darling won't you pour me a beer
What the hell you doing here
Beauty like you is real top shelf

Blush of red shot across her face
Jenny put on her best parade
As she sashayed on back to the bar

CHORUS
And so the story goes
No one really knows
But the truth lies in the cards

Better watch your back
Cause they'll stack the deck
Down at the Stateline Bar

Dapper Dan he surveyed the place
Dealer said don't I know your face
Dan avoided his stare and said deal me in

Ronnie was on a run of luck
One look at Dan and he was struck
Felt a big change in the wind

Cards were flying hot and fast
Old John said I think I'll pass
Dapper Dan smiled and said oh hit me again

And when all the cards were down
The only one without a frown
Was Dapper Dan as raked them in

CHORUS
And so the story goes
No one really knows
But the truth lies in the cards

Better watch your back
Cause they'll stack the deck
Down at the Stateline Bar

Things were getting hard to stand
Dapper Dan hadn't lost a hand
Clouds of suspicion were a rolling in

Ronnie's temper was mean and short
And he hated to lose at cards
Plus he didn't like the way Dan was looking at Jen

So Ronnie turns to Dan
And said mister you haven't lost a hand
Luck seems to me more than coincidence

Dan sat back and looked at his face
Said son don't I know your name
You remind me of someone from the past

CHORUS
And so the story goes
No one really knows
But the truth lies in the cards

Better watch your back
Cause they'll stack the deck
Down at the Stateline Bar

Then Ronnie pulled a colt from his vest
And all the boys they hit the deck
Except for Dapper Dan, who sat stone still

That's when he made his first mistake
For his jacket pocket he did reach
And the blast of the Colt it filled the room

When the smoke cleared Ronnie was gone
Someone yelled better call the law
Poor Dapper Dan's, he's just been killed

Jen bent over to close his eyes
And in his pocket and to her surprise
Was a picture of a girl and her name was Lill

CHORUS
And so the story goes
No one really knows
But the truth lies in the cards

Better watch your back
Cause they'll stack the deck
Down at the Stateline Bar

Ronnie was racing down Boundary Pike
Clocked in about a hundred and five
When he lost the road at Horseshoe curve

The reason why he was running so fast
He'd seen a ghost from his past
Plus he was being pursued by the law
