Story Behind The Song

I was catsitting, and Freddie wouldn't come when called, so I sat outside and wrote the first few lines of this song. It's ultimately about how accepting my mother's death from alcoholism led me to no longer believe in God or fear death.

Lyrics

Did I cast my pearls before swine?
Did I spend too many years wasting too much time?
And was it worth the price that I paid
Trading energy for energy til the end of days

Death is only one small change
A universal arrangement, an irreversible exchange
Did you think that this would last forever?
Well, you were right in a sense, which feels a little strange
So we might as well say come what may
We're all gonna die either way, hey!

They carve a stone to make us remember
Put pennies on our eyes to pay our way across a river
And if ritual could keep us from the eternal bliss of nothingness
We could bend and pray that everything
would stay the same and never change
But death will only keep us honest
And who am I to criticize the right or wrongness of your goneness
And though fairy tales may lighten the mood,
Because it's what I like to hear simply doesn't make it true
And you know that at the end of the day,
We're all gonna die any way, hey!

Why do we do what we do without consciousness or clue?
When it's our turn to show what we've learned,
why do we fall into old grooves
Why do we love what we hate, just because we can relate?
What's familiar might kill ya, but at least it feels safe

I remember that ruinous day
They wouldn't let us see your body, it was too far decayed
How kind of them to spare me the visual
Of two years' accumulation of wasting away

Oh, will we ever pass beyond?
All good things must end, my friend, it's no phenomenon
Will we ever pass beyond
What is life without its absence, without silence what is song?
