Story Behind The Song
Having just moved to a home on the banks of a river that flows north, I miss where I used to be. Despite the beauty of my surroundings, my life seems to be going in the same contrary direction as the river. I now live "too far out" to start over again and I feel a keen sense of loss. The irony of being a classical musician in a country-music-loving area prompts me to write this song.
The melody was created by singing a capella against a country shuffle rhythm track. Piano and keyboard accompaniments were added later (where is that live band when you need one?!?) The lyrics tell the story.
Song Description
My life as a music teacher in a fast-paced community has been given up. I now sit alone at my piano in a house built far into the country, on the banks of a river that flows north. I compare the direction of my life to the river, reflecting upon the past and looking forward to the future. The search for a new sense of purpose causes me to wonder why I am. I'm no longer in control my own destiny; still, I'm waitin' here for my man," doing the best that I can . . .
