Honey I'm Home

Story Behind The Song

I reconnected with my band teacher from Grade School... He was encouraging and gave me great advice. One day I was doodling around playing pop songs on my Sax after band rehearsal. I was playing over in the corner and he heard me. I thought I was gonna get in trouble because I was not practicing Band Songs. He listened for a minute and finally said "hey, you're pretty good" and he wrote the name Stan Getz on a piece of paper and handed it to me. He said listen to this Sax Player. I did and was so inspired that I went ahead and ended up playing professionally for about 10 years. Dr. Paul Rosene is his name. He is now 92 and we've stayed in touch all these many years. Last year he lost his wife of 62 years and was devastated by this loss... so after talking to him a number of times and even visiting him in Florida I said to him, Paul, a good part of your career has been in helping and healing people through music. How about we come full circle and write a song that might help people through their loss of a loved one... like you're going through now. He was hesitant not having written lyrics before and most of his music career was bringing the compositions of others into performance venues... So I said, I'll write the music and lyrics but I want you to think about what goes through your mind each day without Doris. He said "well I'll think about it but one thing I do still do each day is when I come in the door I still say "honey, I'm Home"... and right there he gave me what the title was to be... This song came out of our conversations and is dedicated to Doris Rosene his dear wife of 62 years. This is the piece I wrote with Paul Rosene... my old music teacher... he's 92 and just lost his wife Doris... after 62 years of marriage...

V. 1

How do I get you off my mind

and you know dear, I don't mean to be unkind

But those sweet, sweet memories

of the life of love we shared

come visit me at the most inopportune of times.

V. 2

First my morning coffee has never tasted the same

not made by your oh so loving hands

From there my days seem

all disjointed and lame

without our morning chats

where we'd solidify our daily plans

V3.

I should be out making new memories

not reminiscing here , all alone

but all I seem to think of is

when this awful pain might mend

And how I miss calling out to you at days end

Honey I'm Home.

Bridge

But I guess the most painful of all

comes that dreaded moment each night

When I turn out the light and turn

to kiss you goodnight.

Then it all comes crashing through

I still can't believe I really true

I'll never again hear those precious words from you. Love you.

V. 4

So take care dear

I just know I'll hold you again some day

when the fates finally turn their attention my way

And oh yes, the kids are fine always thinking of you

and God willing I'll see you before they do.

V.5.

I hope you don't mind our little daily talks

as I wander through our cold and lonely home

you see I still feel your spirit beside me on my walks

and somehow, somehow, this makes me feel a little less alone

V6.

(its just that thing called time, now

That keeps us apart)

They tell me I must have things here yet to do.

Just remember you're always here,

Dear, So deeply in my heart

Until that Glorious day...

when I finally get to say to you

Honey I'm home
