Oklahoma Cowboy

Story Behind The Song

I was in Austin Texas and decided to hear some real country music so I took a cab well out into West Texas. I heard some of the best country music I've ever witnessed, but at around 11 o'clock a whole bunch of cowboys came in because the touring rodeo had just finished. At the bar I met a young man who was in the rodeo who was looking depressed. I had a long conversation with him and he told me this story. I was so moved I wrote this song that night.

Song Description

This is about a young man from Oklahoma who after winning a local county fair on his horse "Becky" was able to win a horse riding contest. He became popular locally and auditioned for the touring rodeo and actually made it into the performances. He left Oklahoma, and his girlfriend, and became the star of the rodeo which toured mainly in Texas far away from his native Oklahoma. After a summer of wanting he began to miss his girlfriend and his home very badly. The song is about that remorse and his desire to go home and be with his girlfriend.

Lyrics

OKLAHOMA COWBOY
C Fmaj7
I ain't never been to Texas before But now I'm winning money on my horse
Em7
But I'm just a boy who won riding at the local county fair
Dm7
And now I'm sitting here and wondering where, where
Cmaj7 C
you are

Sweet Jesus I'm in the rodeo And doing all the things I always dreamed I'd do
But man there big out here and I don't know if I can stand
To keep on pushing week after week so I can win, it's all a dream
Fmaj7 C Fmaj7 C
Cause I'm an Oklahoma cowboy and I made the rodeo
Dm7 C
It's all I ever wanted it's a dream come true
Fmaj7 C Fmaj7 C
But at night I think about you and I trip back over time
Dm7
And I wonder if I had it wrong when I tried to decide
whether to go C
They all pay attention when I ride into the ring
And Becky my old horse has been the best since the spring
But now it's fall and I don't even know what town I'm in
And the memories of you stir deep inside and strum that chord again for your love
Cause I'm an Oklahoma cowboy and I made the rodeo
It's all I ever wanted it's a dream come true
But at night I think about you and I trip back over time
And I wonder if I had it wrong when I had to decide whether to go

If I could do it over I think that I'd a stayed
And shared with you the love I left when I decided to go away
Could be the blues I don't know I can't seem to have it both ways
Maybe I'll quit after the fall and go home to stay if you're still there
