Story Behind The Song

I took some of these well-known song titles and wove them into the lyric of my song to tell Neil's story, intertwined with my own.

Song Description

I was a fan of 1960s idol Neil Sedaka, who had penned so many great songs for himself and for other artists. You still hear "Oh! Carol" and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" even today, plus his later hits (e.g. "Laughter in the Rain" & "Love Will Keep Us Together").

Lyrics

Intro. Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah,
Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah. (Twice).

1. I wanna look back a few years to when I was seventeen -
I used to listen to your music and sit in my room and dream.
I heard you singing Oh Carol, I am but a fool,
And Breakin' Up Is Hard to Do -
To me you were really cool.
So I got myself together, started writing songs,
Became the leader of a teenage band that really used to rock along.

Refrain. But we never did it like you, Neil,
With your Sha-la-ha-la-lah,
And your Image of a Star
You made us feel we never did it like Neil.

Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah,
Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah. (Once).

2. Once you were writing songs with Carol by your side,
But then your love affair went wrong - I guess you nearly died.
So you went bought a One-Way Ticket to the blues,
But with the kind of songs you write
I knew you would never lose.
Then in 1960-something you disappeared from view,
But I kept singing and writing my songs when no-one had heard of you.

Refrain. But I never did it like you, Neil,
With your Sha-la-ha-la-lah,
And your Image of a Star
You made me feel I never did it like Neil.

Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah,
Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah. (Once).

3. Now the 1960s have become a memory,
Carol's found another friend to sing her melody.
And I guess we all believe the Tra-lah Days are gone,
'Cos Better Days are Coming, and you've told me in your song.
So I'm glad to feel the keyboard and know you play one too -
That is why The Music Takes Me back to Beautiful You.

Refrain. Yes I'm gonna do it like you, Neil,
With your Sha-la-ha-la-lah,
And you see I'll be a star
'Cos I can feel I'm gonna do it like Neil.

Outro. Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah,
Sha-la-ha-la-lah, dooby-wah. (Repeat to fade at end).
